More limericks!

Here's our final set of limericks, this time written by Aaron N.

There once was a lady from Spain
Who had traded half of her brain
For a new text book
Just so she could look
Like she wasn't really so plain.

Eddy was a boy who loved to eat
His world revolved around his next treat.
Once when he ran out of food
He didn't know what to do
So he began to snack on his feet.

Just because I am very small
I work all day in the kids' mall.
Since it's Christmas Eve
I can't even leave
Until Santa Claus sees 'em all.

A flower grew by the roadside
Right by where the horse carriage rides
A child picked it
And even licked it
Then stuck it to a wedding bride.
Good job, Aaron, and all the other students who tried their hand at writing limericks.

Some more student limericks!

Here are a few more of our students' limericks. They're quite talented little writers, aren't they?

Sidney P wrote:

There once was a giraffe named Bob,
Who would look at his spots and sob.
He longed to be striped
Like zebra was striped,
That zebra who wished he was Bob.

and also,

After Barbara ate six moldy pies,
She slowly leaned back with a sigh,
Patted her tummy,
and cried, "Oh, yummy!"
But nobody understood why.

Mandy A penned these limericks:
A blubbering star cried in the night,
Saying, "Give me the power of flight!"
The galaxy heard.
Said, "Ha! You're absurd."
Forever a flightless, floating light.

and this one,
There was a young bee from the hive.
He was daring, fearless, quick, alive.
He challenged his skills,
And stung old man Mill!
If only the bee could revive.
In our next post, we'll have four more limericks, all written by the same young poet. Hurray! Congratulations to all of our wonderful students.

Recently some of our students wrote some limericks, which we would like to share with you.

Today's limericks were penned by Katrin Frantz.

There once was a young girl named Nancy
Who had a few ants in her pants-y
She squeaked like a mouse,
Ran into the house,
But the ants still made her feel ants-y!

There once was a greyhound named Sydney
Who laid on the couch all the evening
She ate all her chow
Yet I don't know how,
This greyhound named Sydney stays skinny!

Good job, Katrin! Next time we'll post another student's limericks!

Happy new school year!

Here at YES Writing, we're busily preparing for classes to begin next week. This year we have our largest enrollment numbers so far - we've had so much expansion that we've recruited some new teachers and volunteers in order to provide classes for all of the interested students. If you'd like to read about our new crew, please take a look at our Staff page, which has short biographies for each team member.

Even though classes begin on Tuesday, there are still some spaces available, so if you procrastinated on registering for classes, hop on over to HSSegue now and see what's still open.

In other news, YES Writing is now working with the Better Together Co-op in Ventura and offering classes through their program! This year, it's a story writing class, but that may change in the future. If you're interested in learning more, please check out their website.

We're looking forward to seeing you soon!

Student takes first place!

One of Mrs. Yip's junior high students entered her Chinese shi poem (based on a form she learned in class) at the Fillmore Festival, where it took first place! Lauren Fairall has given her permission for us to reprint it here. Congratulations, Lauren!

Chinese Shi
Haven't you heard?
It's the newest celebration!
Roses, Daffodils, Daisies, and Babysbreath too,
Are opening their blossoms all a new.
The most extraordinary colors can be seen.
All the flowers are doing their best to look keen.
Come join us for Fillmore's Celebration of Flowers!

Speech Boot Camp

Hello again!

Just a quick update on what's going on with Mrs. Yip's writing classes. Last week we began our first Speech Boot Camp, which we are continuing this week. Our last meeting will be on Thursday; so far we're having a lot of fun learning how to write and deliver speeches of all sorts (narrative, descriptive, that kind of thing). If you're interested in taking this fun class, let Mrs. Yip know so we can look into scheduling another Boot Camp.

Over on HSSegue.com we're still taking registration for next school year. Some of the classes are filling up quickly - some are already full - so make sure you get over there soon if you want to register. Although we take a wait list, there's absolutely no guarantee that a space will open up, so plan ahead.

If you have registered on HSSegue, make sure you send in your deposit as well; you won't be officially enrolled until we have both HSSegue registration AND a deposit. Remember, it's very easy to pay via Paypal (through HSSegue).

We'll soon have more information up regarding the HSSegue group, so keep an eye out for that as well.

Until next time!
